On a disappointing party-line vote, the State Assembly passed their version of the mining bill that rolls back environmental protections, lacks accountability for mining companies and silences the voice of the public.

The real fight on this issue is NOW as the bill is in the Joint Finance Committee.

Subject: (required) Dear Senator, I am concerned about threats posed by the proposed strip mine in Northern Wisconsin for our environment - our watersheds, ecosystems, crops and even Lake Superior. Assembly Bill 426 was unacceptable and needs to be scrapped. As you know, the out-of-state mining company, Gogebic Taconite, is proposing a 22 mile-long strip mine located in one of Wisconsin's most pristine natural areas, and is trying to change Wisconsin's mining laws to do it. It is important that our mining regulations contain strong environmental safeguards in order to protect the beauty and valuable natural resources of Northern Wisconsin, and the health of our families. Weakening environmental laws for the benefit of an out-of-state mining company is unacceptable. Please oppose any proposed mining bill that would undo critical protections for our air and water.
